Kamala Das found guilty

Kamala Das has been found guilty in the Rs 2 crore Salt Scam that had rocked the state in 2001.

The Special Vigilance Court, while passing out the order on 24 July, has sentenced the former Women and Child Development (WCD) Minister in Naveen Patnaik’s Cabinet with 2 year rigorous imprisonment (RI) and a fine of Rs 4000.

Dr.Das as the Women and Child Development Minister in the Naveen Patnaik Cabinet in 2000-01 and was dismissed under “shadow of corruption”, said an official.

The State Vigilance had filed a case against Dr.Das for her alleged involvement in the supply of sub-standard salt to Anganwadi Centres of the state under the Mid-Day Meal Scheme.

She favoured the Prince International for supply of iron fortified salt ignoring the adverse recommendations of the then Secretary of the WCD department and the Chief Secretary.

The Special Vigilance Court has also sentenced Raj Kumar Routray, the Managing Director of Prince International, 1 year rigorous imprisonment (RI) besides a fine of Rs 2000.

The vigilance counsel, Dilip Kumar Chottray, said that the Vigilance had filed charge-sheet against the former Minister under sections 120B of the Indian Panel Code (IPC) and 13(1) D and 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
